Some friends and I were talking about one thing and another, and the song "Old John Robertson" came up. Where did the song come from? Who was Old John Robertson? Thanks.
Justin McDevitt - 07/22/2010 06:09 PM
Hello,
I hope that this message is forwarded to Chris's attention.
Chris, I have been a fan of yours since the Byrds. I had just turned 13 years old when I first heard Mr Tambourine Man and was brlown away. I remember beingexcited by this new sound and better yet, it happened during the British Invasion. Turn, Turn Turn was equally a great song that jangly guitar sound!
I have at least 5-6 original Byrds vinyl LPS and a couple of CD anthologies as well.
I was a Flying Burrito Brothers fan as well and am just re-discovering the work of this early country-rock band in recent months: Sin City, Christine's Song, Juanita, Dim Lights and my favorite: Four Days Of Rain.
I have apreciated your solo work and have at least two original LPS from this part of your life and career.
I remember when I first heard Desert Rose in the late 80s, though would like to become more familiar with this group.
I have been blind since infancy. I grew up with AM radio and the earlier days of rock n' roll as you did. People often ask me if my hearing is superior as a blind person. I believe that I made the choice early on in my life to use my senses in the best way that I could, in order to be an active part of the world around me. I know that when I listen to music, I do not have any visual distractions, so become really absorbed in the listening experience, whether its the Byrds, old Hank Snow songs, or Frank Sinatra singing It's A Quarter to Three, There's Noone in the place, etc.
I have a deaf daughter who is now 12. She has been fitted with two cochlear implants which have helped her with both expressive speech and receptive listening. In terms of vocabulary and quality of speech and language, Maeve has learned to hear far beyond my wife Liz and my expectations. She is an avid reader and is actively involved in school and various recreational activities.
Because music has been such an integral part of my life since early childhood, and has been a real blessing to me, one of my regrets is that Maeve does not hear music in the same way that I do. I know that with the cochlear implants, the brain adjusts over time and hearing in some ways becomes more natural. Yet, I know that she will never hear Chestnut Mare as fully as I do, in all its wonderful musical nuances.
Chris, I hope that you get this.
Blessings to you and your great body of work that continues,
Justin McDevitt St. Paul MN

Thank you and your music for being there since I was born... my peacenik parents were playing The Byrds to me before we emigrated to the U.S., well before I learned English. And I discovered the Desert Rose Band growing up in south San Diego without realizing it's the same people. This early exposure to folk music has no doubt shaped much of my political philosophy and my years of fighting wealth and privilege, including my years in the American labor movement. While I'm continually disappointed by so many 60s lefties who have gone evangelical and turned to conservative radio, I'll always be thankful for your music.

Hi Connie,
Peggy Hanson said that you may have a Byrds hat or 2 that I could buy? I've worn out two of them already on the road and such and would like to get my hands on at least one (to wear) and one to keep in mint shape for a collector's item.
Do you have any in stock?
Thanks! My band, Mars Arizona played a few show with "I See Hawks in L.A.", I understand Chris played on one of their albums. We also did some studio work with Al Perkins in 2007 for our 2008 release "Hello Cruel World". Before that, way back in the 70s, my band at the time opened up for a version of the Flying Burrito Brothers for a string of shows - the band was Sneaky Pete, Gene Parsons, Gib G., and Skip Batten. Fun times. What a legacy.
Cheers,

Re: Back on the Burrito Trail... Chris Hillman and Herb Pedersen played at the Soiled Dove in Denver on 07/09/10. When I walked into the club, Chris was visiting with his Colorado friends. He soon went backstage. Beautiful mandolin music began to flow from behind the stage's curtain. Chris and Herb played for nearly two hours. The audiance was treated to gems from the Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers and Manassas. It was one of the best concerts that I ever saw! Thank you Chris and Herb for making it happen! Cheers, David

Chris (and Herb):
Just want to thnak you for the terrific show at the Soiled Dove in Denver on Friday, July 9. The set was wonderful and enjoyed by all.
I am the guy who asked you to play one for Geno. Much thanks.
A tune he wrote that you may have helped on back in the day is called "Del Gato". It is a stirring tribute to the lonesome cowboy. I could see you guys bringing this one back to life in fine fashion.
Thanks again,
Steve

Dear Chris,
I listened to your Library speech and I enjoyed it very much. Like a real bird you have overflown the status of a shy bassplaying Byrd.
Remembering your quote: You are never too old to learn, I have picked up to the mandolin now. Really very underestimated instrument.
Question: What brand of mandolin are you playing on your gigs?
Timothy Taylor - 07/08/2010 08:41 AM
Chris,
I was reading the article online in Triste about your Church singing. I am also a convert to Orthodoxy and was amazed to find out about your interest in byzantine music and your Orthodox faith. I have a tattoo on my right arm that I got when I wasn't going to Church of Clarence's D-28 with angel wings and a halo around the headstock. I include him in my prayers for the departed now, and am interested in knowing more about him from people who knew him personally. May Christ our Lord bless you and grant you many years.

Greetings Chris, I've been following your music since around 1975 when I first heard Emmylou Harris and realized your association with so many musicians intertwined that I love. You came to Dayton and played at Canal Street Tavern here about 1987 and I finally got to meet you along with Herb Pederson! I was elated, you slipped my name into a song line where it fits in Desert Rose...I have never been so flattered, thank you! You're still at the top of my list and I even caught myself singing a line from one of the songs on that album today...'walls around your heart' - 23 years later...your clever words and prose just stay inside and we pull them out at random times like a record player to reminisce. Great to see you here - Dayton will always wait for you and your music to return!
Best wishes of peace and motivation,
Laurel

Thanks again,Chris! I watched the Library of Congress presentation in it's entirely and my favorite parts several times. It doesn't seem like a year ago you played at the Mosquito Serenade in FarNorCal. You are always the gentleman. I've had the good fortune to meet you a few times in my life and always come away with a feeling of "WOW"!I look forward to your next phase be it singing cowboy or national treasure. BTW Nice martin and I assume you will have a Hillman model mandolin someday. I know I'd buy one. Blessings to you and yours.

Hi Chris. You graciously signed my '65 P bass after the Chattanooga show. As a result, it is now officially referred to as "The Hillman bass." And the show was outstanding, all the more because I had not yet heard you and Herb in an acoustic setting. Herb's harmonies were clear as a ringing bell, the mandolin was awesome, his guitar perfect. There's nothing like acoustic music on a big PA, outside... And to hear "It Doesn't Matter" as the closer is getting pretty close to heaven.
Dan Dorris - 06/13/2010 08:14 PM
Listened to the two part rebroadcast interview of 'Musicians Radio'. What a great overview of a career and the music it inspired and was influenced by. It also reminded me that since 1976 I always confused the titles (not the music) of "Slippin' Away" and "Southwest" (Herbs album).

Re: Riding down the lost Burrito Trail... I saw Chris Hillman's three Arizona concerts in April/May 2010. The first gig was on a snowy evening in Flagstaff. Chris warmed up the chilly Orpheum Theatre with a few bars of "Swanee River." The rest of the evening was magic! The next show was at the Cave Creek Coffee House near Phoenix. They sold fresh pies and burritos. It was an outdoor venue with a desert sand floor. Chris and Herb rocked under the stars. The last show at the Tucson Music and Arts Festival. It was unsurpassable. Thanks for the music, Chris!

I just saw The Desert Rose Band in Petaluma and it was just awesome to say the least. No flaws and crisp sound made this the best concert I have seen in many years. I would see these guys again and again. The best in country rock music. I can't say enogh

What a supreme pleasure to see my first Desert Rose concert last night (5/29/10) at the Mystic in Petaluma, CA.
To behold a performance where each performer was so obviously a consummate musician and master of his craft was such a treat!

The usual great show at the Crystal Palace on Thurs, May 27.
John Jorgensen seems to get better and better
By far the best place to see a concert. And AMAZING food. We drove 145 miles each way and it was worth the Memorial Day traffic.
I'm uploading some video on YouTube under my name
BTW, the new Padre Hotel downtown changes the dynamic of the city. One of the great hotels we have stayed in anywhere in the world. Who'd a thunk it?
Jo Ann Cobb - 05/28/2010 10:58 PM
My husband, my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, and myself all enjoyed the Desert Rose Band very much. We saw you many years ago when you played in the Chicago, Illinois area. We were saddened when you seamed to vanish from show biz. I see you had some good friends that died and you wanted to spend some quality time with your family. If ever appearing in the Chicago area we would love to see the show. Please let us know.

Hello Chris:
This is Richard from the Birchmere. I am looking forward to seeing you with DRB on Friday! I am also having a reunion with my high school friends, with whom I first saw the Byrds some 40 years ago. What a way to celebrate a reunion with a reunion of DRB. I haven't seen these guys for 40 years.
Brian Biedebach - 05/25/2010 04:36 AM
Saw the DRB reunion in 2008 at the Coach House and we are looking forward to seeing you in Bakersfield this week. I saw Buck Owens a week before he passed at the the Crystal Palace. I was able buy the DVD for the night I saw him. I believe you could purchase DVDs for most of his shows. The last time I was there for another concert they still had all the remote control cameras in place. Are we going to be able to buy the DVD of the show this Thursday?

Looking forward to seeing you with DRB in Bakersfield this week. Last year's gig at the Coachhouse must just have been the best I have seen in 45 years of watching live music! Can you top it?
Lately, I have been listening to unofficial recordings of you with Kim O'Kelly. I don't know much at all about her. What was her bachground? How did you get together? What did she do after your gigs together.
Cheers

Ofcourse I know you were the shy bassplaying guy with The Byrds.
Ofcourse I know you increased in songwriting and singing along with the bands you picked up along the road.
Ofcourse I know you florished like a flower with all the ones you once loved and now you love again.
It is really good to see you being host for McGuinn and playing "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" together.
Chris, it was once you that made me pick up the bass, now again you make me pick up the mandolin and I really enjoy playing it.
Thank you for the inspiration.
I only saw you once in The Netherlands ( Rotterdam 1971) with the FBB. You were standing next to me for a cup of coffee and I was too shy to ask for an autograph.
Now I know it is the chord-change to F#m that makes the difference to Merle Haggard's version of White Line Fever. Was it your idea?
"Wrinckles in my forehead . . . etc.
Nevertheless, it's still one of my favorites.
Thanks anyway for the music you make.
I enjoy the possibilities of YouTube.
I love the clips of you and Herb doing old (Byrds)stuff.
Thanks and love, Henk Roodbergen

Greetings! You may remember me from St. Barbara's. After my fiance Natalia Nikolenko Lambert died in 2003, I eventually gravitated to St. Athanasius, where I still attend.
I was just bouncing around the internet when I landed on your website. What a well-done, complete and sophisticated website. I've spent the last 50 minutes reading everything. You're going to be in Flagstaff this week, but I also noted you're scheduled to play the Wincester Tavern & Music Hall just outside Cleveland at the end of October. Should I be visiting my brother in Canton, OH around that time, we should drop in. What an amazing musical venue - the Winchester!
I know my brother owns some Desert Rose Band records and CD's.
Take care, and, oh, incidentally, I was born on December 3, 1944!
Signed,
David S. McCalmont

I found the countryish material by the Monkees quite pleasant, but more pop-oriented than country-rock. Some have even argued that band-oriented country music harkens back to Hank Williams. Anyway, there is an interesting interview of Chris, et al, in "America's Music: The Roots Of Country" (1996) by Robert K. Oermann. In it the author alludes to the fact that "...Shiloh, Nashville West...the International Submarine Band, Dillard and Clark...were also part of the emerging country-rock scene. But...the catalyst was Gram Parsons, and the album that defined the style was SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO, made when he, Hillman, and White were all members of the Byrds in 1968." (Clarence was actually a session musician on the aforementioned lp.)

I am probably mistaken,,, Were you not Hillman of /aka "The Southern Hillman Furay Band.? I did not look far into the web site ,, however I did not see it along with the Desert Rose Band epilouge. My sister Geralyn Slaughter Haas was a friend of Richie's and even sang with Stephan Stills & CO. at Red Rocks (WHEW !!! ., YEARS AGO ..) Geralyn and Bruce lived on the (WAY) far side of HorseTooth Resevoir.
Anyway .. 'Big Fan'.. Pleae come and play in West Yellowstone,Mt. In Memory for my Daughter -Kasey Haynes. I will show you and your band a very beautiful time on Hebgen Lake,,I can even cook for a crowd. Please consider the invitation. Thank You for your time -

I touch base with your website only every so often, and what a magnificent surprise to see/hear your career recap before a Library of Congress audience last October. However it came to pass, I'm pleased to see the knowledgeable folks at LofC recognized you as a "person of interest" whose career journey touches so many musical movements that my "Baby Boomer" generation went through on our way to gray hair and facial wrinkles. You have much to be proud of - not the least of which is your good fortune to have had the support of great friends and extremely talented fellow musicians. But there's still that Prairie Home Companion appearance that needs to happen, dagnabit. (Apologies to Gabby Hayes).

Hello Chris:
This is Richard from the Birchmere. I have a son, Jesse, who you helped convince to go to college instead of banking on becoming a rock and roll star. My wife and I are coming to California to see the DRB reunion show at the casino on May 28. Can't wait to see you on the Left Coast. I will be meeting up with high school friends who I have not seen in 40 years, but we were Byrds buddies back in the day.

Driving from Huntington Beach to Bakersfield on May 27 to see DRB. Hope to meet anyone else doing the trek. There's a Jehovah's Witness convention in town so hotel rooms are VERY hard to get.
And Connie says no video recording is planned for the tour-YIKES!
I WILL FRONT THE $ AND YOU CAN KEEP THE RIGHTS-the DRB deserves to be archived for the future. Last summer's gigs were unreal.SteveDuncan looked like he was levitating. I need to watch that repeatedly on a big screen!!!!!!!!

I had a laugh the other day reading the introductory sentence to a series in the Financial Times newspaper about Lehman Brothers. It began, "The 31st floor of Lehman Brothers Times Square headquarters was a haven of dealmaking, power-broking and palce intrigue." (3/16/2010, page 17) Sounded straight out of "Sin City" to me.

Hello, Chris! Just reading your entry in wikipedia (mmhh!), and decided to drop by...I remember about 25 years ago, when I was 14, when I started buying records, reading about The Byrds...the albums weren`t issued in Argentina, excepts on imports: extremely expensive for a student...well, when I bought The Byrds Box Set, I felt I`ve come full circle (sort of) When the CD era began, it was possible to get some Desert Rose Band records...what a wonderful music! By the way, the website is great.

Hello Connie & Chris,
My name is Frank Sanzo. As you may recall, I am responsible for initiating your engagement at the Tucson Folk Festival this year. When I first inquired as to the possibility of broadcasting your performance, I was informed that due to a new Live CD due out soon, that would not be a possibility. My question now is,when will that CD be commercially available? I currently manage a music store in Tucson, and would like very much to be the first in the area to offer this CD to the public. Please advise. Thanks, Frank Sanzo

I have enjoyed The Woodsongs hour, featuring you and Herb, immensely. It is on mp3 various players, for portable listening, and never ceases to bring a smile...and my rapt attention.
I appreciate the various postings on YouTube also.
You, Herb and other excellent musicians (I have to mention Al Perkins, Richie Furay and Bernie Leadon) have contributed hugely to my musical enjoyment over many years.
I will continue to follow the bluegrass, country and folk music you do so well.
May the Lord continue to bless you and yours,

The first time I saw Chris Hillman was with the Byrds at a concert at a small community college in Southern California in 1964. I was 12 years old and in absolute mad love with Chris. He was very gracious by giving me an autograph through an open car window as the group left the venue. I've been a huge fan for 46 years. OMG!

Chris - Been a long time since the Cellar Door and The Rosslyn Mountain Boys, and Firefall and Jock Bartley. Just stopped by to say "Howdy"......
Joe Cummings - 01/21/2010 08:40 PM
I've always admired Chris for being there at the beginning, enduring the grind of the road ande still being there now. I saw him with the Byrds numerous times back east and got a chance to meet the Clark Bros. at Tahoe, where we shared a row of dressing rooms. I have a small amount of influence getting acts booked for outdoor summer/fall concerts in Carson City, NV. So, e-mail or call me.

I've been a big fan both of the Byrds, when I first heard you in 1965 through the later 60's with the Burritos, Mannases, Souther, Hillman, Furay Band, to the Desert Rose Band. I was delighted to hear that you came into the Orthodox Church.I am an Orthodox priest living in Reno,Nevada (OCA) and actually serving in St.John The Baptist Serbian Orthodox Mission here.If you ever venture to Reno, we'd love to have you visit us.
Thanks for the wonderful music all of these years!

Just finished reading "desperados": as if the book was written for me, it connects all the music and musicians I've been listening and it shows what a great writer/singer/player AND person Chris is. I saw him the first time in 1971 with The Burrito's (Sneaky Pete, Bernie Leadon, Rick Robert, Michael Clark) in Rotterdam and a couple of years later with BB?Country gazette in Amsterdam and I still love the play Sin City, My Uncle etc.
Would like to participate in a workshop with Chris if one would come up somewhere in the US this year.

Hey Chris,
So my husband has been carrying around a tape by the "illman"......a huge group of us have been treasuring it because nobody seemed to be able to find a cd of it. Yea...come to find out just recently it was the "hillman"!!! We LOVE the it! Must bring back memories. I got the cd for my husband for Christmas. Now that we came to this revelation, it turns out you were booked to come play here in Fairbanks, Alaska!!!! It looks like it was postponed/cancelled. I hope that you are feeling better and you definitely rebook because that would be the ultimate for a large group of us up here in Fairbanks!! Get well.

I wrote once before about my son and Chris's influence in his music. If you have the time look at www.fitzgeraldrock.com They just produced their first CD. Excuse some of the language in the lyrics, but I think it is great classic style rock/country. Any ideas on how to get this mainstream? That is if you think it is worthy. The Cd was cut in 12 hours...a bit raw but that was how they wanted it.... I would appreciate any comments/critique...Thank you, Allan Goodknight

I just got a copy of the Slippin' Away CD. I remember this from 1975 and had it on 8-track at on time. I managed to get a like new CD but it cost $28.00. Why isn't your catalog more available?

Happy Belated Birthday, Chris. I'm so happy that you are still here and creating music. I attended your talk at the Library Of Congress and loved all of your stories, including the one about your childhood pet horse, Ranger. In honor of your birthday, and in memory of Ranger, I made a donation in your name to CANTERUSA. This organization works tirelessly to save thoroughbred ex-racehorses from being sold to slaughterhouses. They sent a letter to you in care of your agent in Nahville. I hope you receive it. Next year I'll donate in memory of Peanut Brittle.

I just learned how to record via computer from albums and save to iPod, so I've dusted off some of my oldie goldies, and one of them was "Last of the Red Hot Burritos." Oh my gosh, what a fabulous, fabulous recording. Surely the 60s/70s were a golden age for music. Anyway, just wanted to thank you, Chris, for the many hours of happiness your music has given me over the years. This Burritos album and "I Am a Pilgrim" from the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" album are gifts of pure joy. Thanks and blessings to you and to your family too.

Dear Chris,
You are a legend, period. Every year I write a Christmas song and this year I decided to write a dedication to you that I recorded with my band, it's called "Chris Hillman Christmas".
I know I'm not meant to post band news here but I'm sure many of your fans would also like to hear it. If you google "The Britannicas" you will find it on our MySpace and YouTube.
People accuse me of writing lyrics that are little bit too "out there" but song is meant with the greatest respect to you. I hope you like it and don't think we're a bunch of goofballs!
Warmest regards to you and your fans this festive season.
All the best, Joe / The Britannicas

My sister and I attended your three performances at Dollywood during Gospel Week. You and Herb were the best artists there.
You give your time and show you care by talking with your fan base and signing autographs.
I hope you had the chance to enjoy the mountains; we were lucky and saw five bears. Breath taking!
Really looking forward to your new CD...maybe even live? It's sure to be great. As always, it will be a special concert and a great time with best friends.

Dear Chris,
I heard you Laura Ingraham the other day and your music really touched my soul, especially Heaven's Lullaby.
I am currently going through a sad divorce (is there any other kind?) and I have severe kidney disease and the lyrics floored me. It's such a beautiful song with such a positive and peaceful message.
Thank you so much for such a wonderful song and a moment that gave me hope for the future.
God bless you Chris.
Chris Adams - 10/16/2009 10:20 PM
It was a real thrill to hear your life story first hand @ the Library Of Congress. About "The Bells Of Rhymney" I was quoting McGuinn from his shows. he said he got an e-mail from a town in Wales saying he had been misspronouncing the name of their town for years. Its pronounced Rumney. He said he did a show over there and pronounced it their way and they all cheered. That song stands out most in my mind when I think back to the first album. After sitting thru 3 showings of "Help" one afternoon in Aug. of 65, I heard the Tambourine album. I remember thinking, this is like a Beatles album, every song is a hit. I had just turned 9 years old.Im so fortunate to have been born when I was. The Beatles handed the ball off to the Byrds and ran far with it. Thanks for the inspiration, best wishes to you.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can access it online ??
Charlie Y. - 10/16/2009 08:57 PM
The Birchmere show with Herb (as usual) and David Mansfield (nice surprise!) was one of the best evenings of Chris Hillman music I've experienced. My first Hillman concert was with the amazing band Manassas, then there was one DC show with the SHF Band (with Emmylou as opening act!) followed by many others. I've been a fan since the second LP I bought--"Turn, Turn, Turn"--and think Chris is one of the few musicians of our generation who really has improved with age. I was lucky enough to hear Chris speak and play some music again today at the Library of Congress and it was well worth the effort of getting there. I look forward to the live CD and agree with the folks who suggest a simultaneous DVD. Thanks again, Chris, for all the years of wonderful music!

Chris...it was great hearing you on Laura's show today, and I'm glad I had the chance to thank you and express my appreciation for all the great music. Right after I told the screener I wanted to mention Manassas, I heard you saying that was one of your favorite times in your career-it showed. As I mentioned this morning that record changed my life, musically speaking-expanding my horizons and discovering new genres at the age of 15. I often take early Sat. morning drives in the Shennandoahs just to listen to it in a suitable place. I work on Capitol Hill and will try to make it to the Library on Friday. Take care and good luck......"Steve in D.C." (Middleburg)

Hello Chris,
It was you, right behind Paul, that made me play the bassguitar. So I follow your career since Mr. Tambourine Man.
(Sorry to hear you didn't play on the hitrecord.)
I love the musical things you did since then and I like your view on mankind.
A little like Roger, you both are back at your roots.

I first heard this saying about the Eagles from Brad Paisley, but I truley believe it should also refer to Chris and the elite few who merged country with rock & roll. The saying goes -
When you drink from the well,

the well.
Thank you Chris Hillman for all the years of great music and praise to the many more to come. God bless.

Re: Just another Burrito sunrise...
I had the privilge to see Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson perform three times in one week. It was an amazing musical experience!
08/05/09 Lakewood, CO - It was an outdoor concert under a white tent at the Lakewood Heritage Center. Chris played songs from the Burritos, Byrds and his solo efforts. Herb provided excellent harmonies and guitar playing. Children danced barefoot in the grass and flowers among flowing bubbles. Everyone had fun! It was like a mini-Woodstock 40 years later!
08/07/09 Steamboat Springs, CO - It was an indoor concert near a ski resort. There were hanging baskets of flowers. The Strings Festival venue was awesome. Sliding doors opened with views of the mountains. When Chris and Herb hit the stage, the audiance was treated to songs from the Byrds, Burritos and Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Some were singalongs. The audiance loved the performance. It was a special evening, indeed.
08/08/09 Grand Junction, CO - It was an indoor concert at the Roper Music Ballroom. It was a small venue. Chris Hillman said, "it was like playing in his livingroom." Chris did a second take on one of his songs. It was almost like being in a recording studio...everything had to be perfect!
Thank you Chris and Herb for the summer concerts in Colorado! Cheers!

Mr. Hillman,
I've been putting off writing this for quite some time. Unfortunately, time is not a friend during the second 50 years. During the 60's, The Byrds became an inspirational band and sound for me. During the different personell changes and sound changes, I could still
find songs that spoke to me. I did actually see you once in S,H & F during
a central park summer concert.
Having left the greater NY area in
'78 for a more rural S.W.Va. setting, and raising 5 kids, getting saved (born again) I continue to enjoy old Byrds music and as a fleggling acoustic bass player in a BlueGrass Band, have found great material from your storied past.
We've performed "Pilgrim" many times.
Thanks for your music, spirit, taste and abilities. Play Roanoke, Va. sometime!
Bruce Henne - 09/07/2009 01:50 PM
I was listening to a bluegrass program on the web and heard "Our Savior's Hands." What a great song! I looked at the artist and wondered "Is theis the same Chris Hillman from the Byrds?" I googled your name and found your website and could hardly believe it. Boy have I been out of touch! I was really touched at your committment to family and church and wondered then if you know Christ, I had heard things in the past that led me to think so. I will be checking into your new and older recordings now!
Glenn French - 08/31/2009 05:32 PM
Tracking a musician's career such as Mr. Hillman's has been very enjoyable through the years. My collection of vinyl spans "The Hillmen" , "The Byrds" , "Manassas" , his solo work , and "The Desert Rose Band" ....thanks for the great composing and performing...

Chris -- the great show you and Herb did in Fall River last summer sent me back to my mandolin. I recently saw that you were at Fur Peace Ranch -- boy would I love a mando lesson! I think The Other Side is great -- it's on my iPod and gets played a
lot.
Peace and God Bless to you and Herb

Traveling from Virginia to Maine to enjoy the sweet joy of the talents of Chris and Herb again created lifetime memories for us. No matter how many times we have heard their clear harmonies and precise musicianship, we also always come away from each venue satisfied that we have shared an evening with true friends and smile remembering in days to come. The dedication of "Heaven's Lullaby" continues to resonate "timeless and still" in the hearts of all in attendance at Boothbay Harbor, but especially for us. Bridging the gap between artist and audience, you speak to the soul on so many levels. Remember your words that we will meet again...good friends always do!

We saw Chris and Herb at the concert in Lakewood, CO, last Wednesday. Beautiful evening, even with a little lightning flashing around. Great show, and the artists were very personable, greeting and signing after the show. (I had the guitar and the pickguards off my Rics. I only need David's name now, and I'll have all the remaining Byrds.) Thanks, Chris, for making the last 45 years more memorable with your tunes.
Andrea Ellis - 08/05/2009 04:22 PM
I had the pleasure of being the opening act for Herb when he played Mama's West in Acworth,Ga. He signed an autograph for me. I just looked at it and it was in 1983. I had a hat that I tried to get all the acts we opened for to sign. Herb was SO pleasant and just a really nice guy. That hat has brought back so many memories....Needless to say, Herb remains in my mind as genious talent with humble ego. I can't remember all the people that signed my hat. His unique, totally nice personallity remains up there with another nice guy Carl Perkins.....It just goes to prove. Genious can still remain humble.
Thanks for the memories,

Chris Hillman is a musical genius! I especially like the music of the Desert Rose Band. They produced some of my favorite songs. Their music takes me back in time to some of the greatest memories in my life. My IPOD plays more Desert Rose Band music than anybody elses. Thanks for the most awesome music. Chris Hillman, you are a legened and one of my all time favorites. Thank you!

We just saw Chris and Herb at the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor, ME last week. They were GREAT!! We drove for 6 hours to get there and sat next to people who drove all the way up from Virginia. The place was packed and Chris and Herb were absolutely fantastic. After the show they came back out and were very friendly with those of us who wanted CDs signed and the like. I am going to talk to the folks at the Narrows in Fall River, MA to see if they can be booked back in. I'll be there for sure.

Hey Chris:
Last time I saw you was in Mendocino, near the bridge, over Big River (instructing me to go see Monique (pedal steel player); you used to know me by name "Chris" also. Now I go by my nickname and registered trademark ARCHURE with my music up at www.archure.net (now in Las Vegas, where I can hear you at KUNV on Sunday afternoons). I always liked the Byrds, and all your bluegrass too (I got the Pedderson etc tape or CD someplace, clean sound). At some point I heard The Desert Rose Band in the L.A. CA area (Palamino? or San Juan Cap?). I have a MIDI tune I did, which I converted to a near bluegrass thing at http://archure.net/midi/ArchureNet-MyValentine-MoonLeo0602130014WBanjo2.mid called MY VALENTINE (and a couple of midi rock versions of it as well).
See you around, : )

Great show @ the Orthodox center in NJ on July 22. It was a pleasure to see how much you and Herb enjoy playing.
My apoligies to Herb calling his guitar a Martin knock off , I went on Collings web site, and was educated. Also, your Martin sounded great ( great bass tones ),and your voices never sounded better. The passion you have for your music and life is contagious , I've been humming "True love " the last 2 days. Also enjoying the new cd.Could not have had a better birthday , Thanks

Chris, Thanks to you and Herb for playing such a great show at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA last night. Well worth the 2 hour drive in the driving rain! Loved the sound of your "Martin OM Chris Hillman" edition guitar. Must be nice to have such a fine piece of heaven built in your honor. I'll have to save my pennies and get that model for myself. Keep up delivering great music to us all. You are better than ever. Cheers!

I finally got a copy of The Other Side cd and am enjoying it very much. Great songs and wonderful lyrics. What are you working on now and when will it be available?
Thanks, Dave

I saw Chris in Waupaca, WI in 2008; wonderful show. Followed him from the '60s. My daughter (32) and I (57) perform as a music duo-it is an honor and a dream to play with your children. Besides the usual Byrd songs, our favorites to do are Wheels, Sin City and Juanita. Thanks Chris for the strong musical influences.

Wow! What an eventful performance you gave in West Plains, MO. Many thanks for giving it your all, in spite of the xtreme heat. Have several of your old LP's and have been enjoying your music for years, but the first time to have the opportunity to attend a show.
Also enjoyed Herb and the special time with Dean Webb. We are from the same county/town as the Dillard's.

Hi Chris & Connie,
Whew, what a great 2 show week here in Missouri.
The Knuckleheads show was good, but man did I ever love the show (and heat!!) at the Ozark Music Festival in West Plains MO.
Thanks Chris & Herb for playing Lil Birdie and I hear a voice calling...it made my humble weekend complete.
Hope you guys come back real soon.
I can't wait for the live cd to be released.
Take Care

Chris,
Seen your show at West Plains last nite. I was the guy with the Sweetheart of the Rodeo t-shirt that talked to you several times. Loved your Red Diamond mandolin. Great sound. Don does a great job...as do you guys. I've been a fan of yours since the late 60's and it was great to see you and especially get to say hello. God Bless and see you in the future!
Bob Jones - 06/19/2009 09:54 PM
Chris,
It was a pleasure meeting you at Knuckleheads in KC (6-18-09). Thank you for answering my question about the writing of "Drifting" and especially for writing an encouraging note for my friend on your most recent CD. I gave it to him today. Here's hoping he'll start playing his guitar and mandolin again. Your show was excellent and well worth the 100 mile drive from Nevada, MO. I hope the rest of your tour goes well. You and Herb deserve an even larger fan base.
Take care.
Joe - 06/19/2009 10:18 AM
Outstanding show last night in Kansas City. It was a sheer pleasure from opening notes until the end. Music from so many sources performed with love by a perfectly professional pair of musicians.
You cannot imagine the joy you bring to the too small group of remarkably old people. Thanks.
Joe - 06/18/2009 02:39 PM
I'm like a kid at Christmas, with the hours and minutes passing slowly. Tonight will be my first time seeing Chris in over 30 years, and first ever time to see Herb.
I just moved to the Kansas City area last week, and that is my good luck.
I've been listening to various and sundry Chris and Herb music for days now, and am very curious what will be included on tonight's set-list. No matter what they play/sing, I will be happy.

DEAR CHRIS-YOU'LL BE GLAD FOR THIS LETTER. I PRIDE MYSELF FOR KNOWING MUSIC SO WELL BUT HAD MY HAT HANDED TO ME A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO. I WAS GOING THROUGH MY OLD VHS TAPES TWO SATURDAY MORNINGS AGO, I WAS IN THE HABIT OF RECORDING ANYTHING THAT DEALT WITH MUSIC STARTING IN THE MID-80'S, SO I STUMBLED ACROSS DESERT ROSE BAND ON AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. I WATCHED THE WHOLE 26 MINUTES WITH MY MOUTH WIDE OPEN, INCREDIBLE, WHAT COHESION IN A BAND AND WERE YOU ALL ENJOYING IT. THEN WHEN HERB DID HELLO TROUBLE IT JUST BROUGHT SO MUCH JOY TO ME I REALLY HAVEN'T COME DOWN SINCE. I'VE ACQUIRED DRB ITEMS OFF OF EBAY AND PLAY NOTHING ELSE AND INTEND ON GETTING EVERYTHING. I HAVE NOTICED HOW YOUR LYICS ARE MIXED IN A CROSS BETWEEN THE LOVE OF A MAN AND A WOMAN AND THE LOVE GOD HAS FOR US ALL AND HOW AT THE SAME TIME YOU COULD EASILY BE TAKEN FOR SPEAKING ABOUT BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. TREMENDOUS LYRICS. TREMENDOUS SONGS. HOW IMPORTANT YOU ARE TO THE MUSIC WORLD. BUT BEYOND THIS I ALSO WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW THAT THROUGH MY OWN DETECTIVE WORK, I WAS ABLE TO HELP MY WIFE(THIS YEAR ON VALENTINE'S DAY WE WERE MARRIED) REALIZE THAT SHE WENT TO MIDLE SCHOOL AND SOME HIGH SCHOOL WITH GENE CLARK RIGHT HERE AT RAYTOWN HIGH HERE IN RAYTOWN MISSOURI, SHE JUST COULDN'T GET OVER IT AS I SHOWED HER AS SHE HAD NEVER PUT IT TOGETHER THAT SHE WENT TO SCHOOL WITH A ROCK MUSIC LEGEND. SHE REMEMBERS DANCING WITH HIM AT TEEN TOWNS AND HER CIRCLE KIND OF RAN WITH HIS CIRCLE A LITTLE BIT. WE VISIT HER SON IN TIPTON MISSOURI AND HAVE STOPPED OFF AT GENE'S GRAVE THERE A COUPLE OF TIMES. GOD'S TIMING IS ALWAYS FABULOUS AND WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT KNUCKLEHEADS HERE IN KANSAS CITY IN JUNE. MY WIFE'S NAME IS JEAN IF YOU HAVE A COMMENT FOR HER ON GENE CLARK. THANKS SO MUCH FOR DOING AND MAXIMIZING SO WELL THE MARVELOUS TALENT GOD GAVE YOU. I AM YOUR PAL BILL YOUNG

I've been lucky enough to see you in various incarnations (McGuinn,Clark, Hillman--Sydney, Aust; DRB w/McGuinn--Coachhouse).
The music from the Byrds through to "The Other Side" has always rung true--no b/s. We have a tape of a radio show you did with Al & Bernie pre DRB--great stuff.
Great to read about the reformed DRB--the reviews have been good.
Like others in this guest book I'd love to see you come to Australia for some shows.
Thank you for so much quality music over the years.
Keep doing what you enjoy
Peace & good health

Dear Chris, I check your website every couple of months just in case, miracles of miracles, you aren't playing a festival in San Diego but are heading for an Australian tour (Melbourne in particular). No luck, as usual! I bought your last album while on holiday in San Francisco - a record store in Haight St, no less. Got to where it was at, just 40 years late! Any new album on the horizon? I've been a fan since Preflyte and that was a while ago. A sincere thank you for the music. Regards, Kit

Wow!...this will be short, cuz I could go on and on (well, maybe I will, but just a little)
...through one of those 'it's-never-a-co-incidence' co-incidences, I found myself sitting in front of the 'Park' stage at Adams Ave Roots Festival...by myself...on my 59th birthday.
I was drawn there partly by the bio on you and Herb...but mostly by His hand, I am sure...I realize it each time...and He's been working on me lately...as there's a struggle goin' on.
Well, I got your 'The Other Side' cd from you yesterday...out of the box you were holding after your gig...and getting THAT cd was no coincidence either...listened this morning...and sometimes cried at the lyrics as I heard them sung...it was my worship service for the morning I now know...
Will be back this afternoon for your show at 2:00 and the reunion show to follow later...
Just want to say 'THANKS' for one of the best Birthday Presents...ever...my birthday couldn't have worked out better...
By being true to yourself, your beliefs and your friends, (and that is obvious) you are having such a positive effect on people you don't even know.
...I am so thankful for that.
God Bless You and your extended Family..
John T.

Would love to see Chris, Roger McGuinn and David Crosby--of Byrds renown, get back together, with latter day alumni John York, Gene Parsons and Doug Dillard, then apply to play as the Byrds at the upcoming Woodstock Festival. I know David probably wouldn't play with the latter three, but if he did and Roger acquiesced, I believe Chris would seriously consider the matter.

Hi Chris
I'm a Bend OR resident and we have a mutual friend, Scott Harris, who now works for amazon. I spoke with Lysa at Breedlove the other day, and it sounds as though you'll be visiting end of July for a Breedlove Festival. Great news. I asked her (and she didn't know) if you and Roger M. ever played together these days. I'd pay to hear you guys alone or together, but I was just curious. I will be there end of July trying hard not to act my age. All the best.

I have followed Chris's career from the Byrds, through to the Desert Rose Band. I live in Canada and was fortunate to hear Chris live on many, many occasions in many bands. Maybe my favorite was a group with Al and Bernie. There is no question Chris had an influence on the entire country music genre.
Thanks Chris, I look forward to seeing you in concert once more.

Chris,my wife and I have been fans of your work for many years, going back to the late 60's (The Byrds), and of course, the DRB. We have seen you perform live w/DRB many times, but one memorable show was at Melody Fair, a theater "in the round" located in North Tonawanda (near Buffalo, NY). We still enjoy your music, and we play your CDs and cassettes all the time. I was just listening to a local rock station that is playing "The History of Rock" over several days this week and next. They played The Byrds, and it brought back many memories, so I thought I would look up your website. Very nice job!!! Hope to see you perform live again soon. Best regards.

Chris:
I just finished reading John Einarson's book Desparados: The Roots of Country Rock. What a great read for any fan of folk, bluegrass, and country rock. I found it a thoroughly fascinating and interesting account on the development of the genre. Having followed your career for 40+ years I found your contributions to the book particuarly insightful. Your recollections of the era and your respect for all the many artists, musicians, producers, etc. and their contributions to country rock's growth and acceptance was for me one of the high points in the book. I came away with a new appreciation for artists such as Gene Clark, Clarence White, Bernie Leadon, and Rick Roberts among others. Also, I found it interesting learning more about the early years of Herb's career and his work with the Dillards.
Planning on seeing you and Herb at the Iron Horse in Northampton, MA in July with my son (also a big fan). Tickets are a Father's Day Gift!

Chris has a musical influence that surpasses some of the greater names in Rock history... I have passed this on to my son who is an aspiring guitarist with the hope that Hilman's music will influence him
soy city - 03/27/2009 02:28 AM
Is it true that you played on the 77's track "the lust, the eyes and the pride of life"?
Any rate I am a huge fan of your work with the Byrds and the Burritos (with and with out Gram).
Hopefully I will catch some of your gigs in the mid west
God Bless
PS
want to share any stores from the Festival Express tour?

Hey Chris,
Thanks for returning to Missouri this June..are you guys signing stuff after
the Knuckleheads saloon show???
You and Herb signed a insurance fan for my friend in Australia at the Frontier Days in Kansas City last year.
He proudly displays it on the wall in Melboure (where the fires were this summer,Luckily the fires missed his house by a 1/2 mile or so).
your music and harmonys are great!!!
see you and herb soon.

Congratulations on the new OM Chris Hillman Custom Edition Martin guitar. It's a great, and well deserved honor. It was my honor to see Chris and Herb perform at Bob Stanes Coffee Gallery in Alta Dena a few years back. Such an intimate venue allowed me to sit at the table right beside the stage while you played my favorite Byrds,Burrito, and Desert Rose Band classics. It was a moment I'll always remember and treasure, as I've loved your music since the sixties.
Ronnie Tierney - 03/16/2009 11:03 PM
Hi: In high school I use to hang out with Anita Kleinow (Sneaky's daughter) and we would go to Burrito rehearsals and concerts all the time. I was just 16, but had the biggest crush on Chris Hillman. He was really a nice guy and I think he knew I had a crush on him but he was always a gentleman and never gave into my silly stupid flirtations. Still love his voice. Please let him know if he's ever in Napa, CA to email me. I'd be more than happy to take a couple shots of him and his wife in the vineyards. God bless!!!

Hi, Chris
I've been a fan and followed your career since 1965 with The Byrds. I stumbled once across a CD of The Hillmen, and like a fool, I passed it up. BUT I do have plenty of your music with Herb, and even the track of Turn! Turn! Turn with Herb and David Crosby. I also have the 20th Century Masters Flying Burrito Bros. Greatest, so I've watched you kinda step out since "Notorious Byrd Bros." and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo". I admire you as an artist and as an individual. Hope to see you in Houston soon.
Gene Clark - 03/05/2009 06:39 PM
Great news: Chris is in Maine in July! Hopefully Herb will be there as well. I am definately going and will spend a few days up there. We saw Chris and Herb at the Narrows in Fall River last year. My wife and I were absolutely delighted with the great music and are really looking forward to more.
Blackfish - 03/05/2009 10:52 AM
Chris you are the best, I have traveled with your music since the early 60's. And to this day you are my favorite artist.. Love your writing and playing. Best of luck Blackfish
tom carle - 03/04/2009 05:59 PM
Hi Chris,
I have always been and continue to be a fan of your music! I am going to try to see you in Illinois this summer when you play there - a couple yrs back I contacted you about 'You Ain't Goin Nowhere' because I wanted to record it - long story short - couldn't obtain the rights - so it didn't get done - but you were great!
Don't go changin'! All the best, tc.
Hartmut - 02/23/2009 06:28 PM
Dear Chris,
this time I write from Austria. I love what you do on stage together with Herb. It is almost unbeatable. I say almost because there ist the Desert Rose Band which I never managed to see. have you been to Europe? I don't think so.
But I even more treasure what you do off-stage. I am a big fan of you an Stve Hill as composers. Simply the best stuff in Country. Steve is a very kind guy who deserves more attention. He is underrated. But your songs are fantastic. Go on writing with Steve!
Best regards,
Hartmut from Austria /Carinthia
jamie hartley - 02/23/2009 01:12 AM
Saw you Herb and John McKuen in Edmonds a few weeks back.
Have been following you and Herb since the late 60's. Saw you at Sky River Rock Festival (II) with the Burritos, and later with Manassas. Saw Herb at the Ice House in Pasadena with the Dillards. Have to say the show in Edmonds surpassed my hopes. You guys were so good. Nice relaxed feeling, but so very tight with the harmonies and playing. Thank you. I wish I could have travelled down to Portland for your show the next night!
Come up to the Northwest to see us more often!
Rich Tupica - 02/21/2009 04:31 PM

Hi Chris. Greetings to you and your family, for a great 2009.
I just wanted to pass on my congrats and gratitude for an excellent book (written with my fellow Canuck, John Einarson) on the Burritos, but more importantly, your place as one of the great - if not the first and greatest - purveyors and schillman for country music, Bakersfield Style.
I had the pleasure of meeting you in Toronto, at Hugh's Place, and I mentioned to you then, as I am sure many well-meaning people have before and since, that you should a) write a book on your experiences, and b) detail your very instrumental part in raising the flag for the blend of country with a beat, or country-rock, or just plain old appreciation for that high lonesome sound - played with some pretty neat guitar and drums.
I had the pleasure to see and meet Gene twice, when he played with Michael (and Roberts and Chaplin pre-Stones, and ...), in the Byrds Reunion tour, which I knew was sham-like, but hell, I am seeing a great songwriter and singer, playing with a Byrd Original Drummer. I have seen Crosby with CSNY, CSN a few times, and even solo - great singer. I saw McGuinn at an old, since torn down park on Toronto's water edge called Ontario Place (now, the beautiful Molson Amphitheatre.)He really IS a great guitar player. Not a flat note.
Anyways, I told my wife after we saw you and Herb, that I have NEVER been so entertained by just the guitar and mandolin and song and story, in one night.
It was for me, a thrill to meet you; you played Sullivan (I saw McCartney twice, because my friend Dave is a huge fan 87 and 05. Anyways, he shows us this guitar that he played Yesterday on the Ed Sullivan show. The Byrds did not need to show their axes, because they just had Attitude.)
Anyways, I have one of yours and Herb's CDs on order, and I cannot wait to enjoy it. Oh look, another evening where guitar and mandolin and song and story totally entertain me for one night again, if not, more.
Take care, Chris, to you & yours.
Your friend in Whitby (just east of Toronto). You are always welcome here.

Dear Chris:
I have always loved your songs and am a long time fan from the Byrds era onwards.
When are you going to put out a Chris Hillman boxed set? How about a retrospective of the past 50 years?
Keep up the great work.
Robert Kniffin - 02/17/2009 12:39 PM
I just got the Hot Burritos book Chris cowrote with John Einarson. THIS!, is what I've been waiting for all these years. As a Chris Hillman fan, I slogged through all the Gram adolation books because it was the only place I could read about the Burritos as a BAND, which is where my intersts lie. Thanks, guys, and great objective job.

Attended your Monday show at Yoshi's San Francisco. Sorry for the low attendance, but, we( my wife and me) got good seats. It is refreshing to see performers that enjoy being there. Your harmonies with Herb are second to none. Ihave been listening to you (Burritos, Byrds, solo, etc.) since about 1972. I saw you in 1973-4 with SHF in Wilmington , NC. Let me apologize for the audience. Their rudeness during the acoustic set was regrettable. It still bugs me today. I have been a fan of Herb since fisrt hearing him with the Dillards. He would have been a good character for the Darlings on Andy Griffith Show. We would have loved to stick around after the show to meet you, but I would probably ask the same questions you have answered a million times. Plus, we flew in from Florida and had been traveling since 5AM eastern time. Look forward to seeing you again. Great show.

Chris...I have to tell you that I have been following your career since the Byrds and have many of your albums but I have to say that "The Other Side" is truly a fantastic gift. You blended all your best into it; bluegrass-gospel, folk-rock, and country to achieve a very special piece of work. But...don't stop playing "Close Up the Honkey Tonks" or Sin City" Ha!...Come to Texas and play in Austin before I'm too old...thanks for all the music...

We just saw you, Herb, and John McEuen in Portland OR on 2/6/09. Tremendous performance, maestros. Hope to catch your show again soon. The new Martin looks sharp.

Hi,
last night (Feb 5, 2009) we were lucky enough to hear Chris Hillman, Herb Pederson and John McEuen at the Edmonds Center for Performing Arts just outside Seattle.
All we can say is thank you for such a wonderful show. I can't remember ever participating in a sing-a-long like we did last night and thoroughly loved it. It was nice to reminisce without feeling cheesy. Our age is our experience and without it we wouldn't have known who we were seeing and feeling such emotion.
Terrific music, voices, and instruments. A great time!
Thanks and keep touring.

He was kind enough to autograph the set list I stole off the stage but wondered how he would remember what to play the following night. Great band and great show. John Parker

Chris, its been about twenty years since we spoke. Sounds like all is very well in your life. I'm hsppy to hear that you brought the DRB together again for a reunion. Would love to see you guys again someday. I'm remarried and have been for ten plus years and am still living and working in Hawaii. I too am the happiest I've been at 60 years old. Much better without the bad habits of years past. Take care and drop me a note sometime. Any chance of playing in Hawaii?

I'm surprised to see some important omissions from Chris's discography. In the early '80s, Maranatha! Music released a series of country albums produced by Al Perkins, on some of which Chris participated. I believe their first country release, 1981, was titled, "God Loves Country Music"; it featured country versions of some praise/worship songs released earlier on the Maranatha! label in their "Praise" series. Chris sings lead & background vocals on "Create In Me A Clean Heart" (Psalm 51)", one of my all-time favorite country &/or gospel songs. In '83, "Down Home Praise" was issued, a featuring Chris on mandolin & vocals. It's an all-acoustic album with bluegrass instrumentation, an also contains some gems, both old & new. I was encouraged in my new Christian walk back then to find one the Sweethearts of the Rodeo still liked the Christian life. God Bless You Good, Chris.

Hey, it was fun to find your website today in a search of DRB on Google. I was writing a blogpost about the time I saw The Desert Rose Band in concert at the Fayette County Fair, West Union, Iowa, in the late 1980's. It was thrilling to see all you talented guys perform. Its a great memory. Glad to see you are still making music.

I recently finished perusing Christopher Hjort's tome, "So You Want To Be A Rock'n'Roll Star The Byrds Day-by-Day 1965-1973." In it devotees are reminded who three of rock's foremost bassists were. I appreciated hearing about the scintillating jam sessions, when the Byrds--with Skip Battin; and the FBB--with Chris Hillman, shared the same stage. It was most touching when, at a Byrds concert, John York espied Chris in the audience and later remarked that he wanted to hand him a guitar to join them on stage.

You are not only a masterful musician, but a true public servant. I'm the acting director for the Every Now and Then Theatre productions of the "Scrooge" and various Halloween broadcasts. When James Wortman told me you had come by the station to make a donation, it was indeed a fortuitous appearance!! Thank you so very much for assenting to act as our host for the broadcast of "The Insanity Case of Ebenezer Scrooge" this year. I'm only sorry I wasn't able to join you all for the recording to thank you in person. Merry Christmas!

Saw Chris and Herb this year on Long Island, what a great night. I have much of Chris Hillman's work, Byrds, Flying Burrito Bros, Manassas, SHF, MC&H, Desert Rose Band, Chris & Herb.
I love it all, but I would like to say that this past year or so I picked up Bakersfield Bound, Way out West and The Other Side. I must say that the music on these recordings is truly wonderful. I mean, so good you can't describe, every track a gem.

I was privileged to see Chris & Herb at McCabes in Santa Monica last April. It was first time I'd seen either of them, and I certainly hope it's not the last. The give & take, the harmonies, and the just plain fun & excellent playing by everyone (including Bill Bryson & Larry Park) made it a night to remember! Also, I'm SO glad I bought The Other Side that night, as I've returned to it again & again.
Chris, thanks for a wonderful career, and PLEASE come back to McCabes!

Mr. Hillman,
I just saw in the paper this weekend that you were performing at Eddie's Attic, which just so happens to be right down the street from where I live.
I haven't heard the new music nor am extremely familiar with the Flying Burrito Bros. but I've started listening to and exploring the Byrds catalogue more and more in recent months and, well, I love the Byrds.
I've been a Beatles fan forever and to take nothing away from them, the Byrds deserve as much acclaim as they get.
Love the Byrds.
Sorry I missed the show and the new music.
p.s. I couldn't get tickets, that's why I missed it in case anybody was wondering.
Doug Davison - 11/22/2008 11:29 AM
I've been a fan of yours since forever. Thanks for keeping it real!! You have been a huge inspiration. I would love to hear what the inspiration for "You can go home" was. It is one of my all time favourite songs, and means a lot to me.
Last but not least ... COME TO CANADA!!!

Joe DiBari - 11/21/2008 12:56 PM
Just saw Chris and Herb for the 2nd time in two years at the Arts Center in Carrboro, NC. (I've been fortunate to have also seen Chris perform with McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman and with the Dessert Rose Band). Again, whatta show! They seem to get better with age. Their harmonies and musicianship are consistently right on! Their mingling around after the show capped off another great performance. My seventeen year old son (who is a self taught musician) attended the show with me and was totally impressed. Me, being a fan of Chris' since his early days with the Byrds, I was thrilled to explain Chris' legacy to my son. Adding to the enjoyment of the show, at one point between songs I shouted "Hello Trouble". Chris and Herb both acknowledged my request and immediately jumped into a rousing performance of the song. It was special for my son because when he was only 3 or 4 years old, he would ask me to play that song from the DRB's Greatest Hits CD, over and over so he could sing along with it. Upon hearing it live and in person, by the masters themselves, he was thrilled. Anyway, to sum it up, GREAT show and don't miss any opportunity to see Chris and Herb perform. THANKS guys!

Dear Chris - My wife Leena and myself had the pleasure of selling merch. for you and Herb last night at the Carrboro Arts Center in Carrboro, NC. It was indeed a pleasure to speak with you, and once again enjoy your music "live", and in-person. As musicians we appreciate the fact that you have remained 'true to your calling' these many years. As Christians we feel blessed to have served creatively with you, as well as all those who have gone before us, and pray His blessings will continue to carry you and family along life's long and winding road. I have always liked Chris Hillman. I liked all the bands he was with since the Byrds. At the Bottom Line about 6 years ago in New York I saw him up close with Herb ( or Dan?) and just the two of them were incredible.
He has been an inspiration for me.
I am working on "She Don't Love Nobody" with my band this week which is how I came upon this site.
Thanks Chris.

Thank you for the Byrds, and every band you have been in since then.It must be a testament of sorts when one listens to the a song and something clicks,
and in the sanctum of the living room, with the cd player on, picks up a guitar
and works out the chords, and sings it and it becomes part of one's life. At least that's what I do, as I did when I heard "Clear Sailin." I had the chance to see you twice over the years- once in Westport,Conn at the Westport Country Playhouse and the second time in Poughkeepsie NY at a place called "The Chance." You were with Bernie Leadon at the time, pre DRB. Wonder if you'll ever be back in the Hudson Valley again? Thanks again, Chris. You have a wonderful site. regards, Bruce Bundock p.s. have you ever heard of Dougie Maclean or Andy Irvine? from Scotland and ireland, they do tour the US. Dougie wrote "the gael" which was used on Last of the Mohicans, and Andy
has played with too many musicians to
mention. He has a song on youtube called
"Never Tire of the Road"a tribute to Woody Guthrie. Be well.

having been a long time Byrds fan and Desert Rose fan, i decided to email you. I have had a few emails from Roger Mcguinn. I hope you would response and tell me about the music you have done recently, like to have you as a friend too, seeing how we have grown old together from albums, eight tracks, cassettes and cds together, thanks rich

Chris, It was so great to meet you in Gettysburg this past August. Tom and I really enjoyed your show, and we love listening to your CD.
I bought "Hot Burritos" for Tom for Christmas, and he is going to love it! Too bad you won't be in the area soon to autograph it for him. Will you be back in Gettysburg next year? Sure hope so!
Here's to a great guy! Much continued success, and God bless you!
Sincerely,

I just saw Chris and Herb in Waupaca Wisconsin at the Indian crossing Casino. I have seen quite a few concerts in my life dating back some 30 years and I was just blown away by how good this show was. I had an opportuinty to meet all 3 of the band members at the Wheel house restaurant before the show and they were genuine guys who now seem to have a deep affection for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Keep on playing because there are very few people in the music industry that are as authentic as you guys! Thanks for all of the memories from all of the great bands you were a part of! Dave Prink

Hello Chris ,
I'have just seen a video on youtube
of Mr Tambourine man . Was great man !!!
I'm now 54 and the first time I heard you singing was in the end of the sixties. I was listening to a
radiostation from germany and they played Hippie Boy. It was fabulious!!
Now 40 years later, I'm grateful
that my children & their children listen to your music too.
From The Scottville Squirrel Barkins via Cherokee ( you & Sneaky Pete )to the Otherside Thanks for all the Good Music.

Desert Rose Band:
I saw your concert at the Coach House in Capistrano on August, 28. You guys sound as good as you did 15+ years ago. It's one of the top 3 concerts I've ever seen, the Eagles being one of them. I hope you can make the DVD concert video(greatest hits?) at the Crystal Palace sometime soon. DVD's were not available when the band peaked, and it's something you can do while you guys still can. I heard it may not happen because of busy schedules. I think this DVD has an larger audience than any thing you guys do independently. It should be given priority. It's a great way to document what the band has accomplished.

I hate to involve you in politics but was wondering as a constituent for the defeat of OBAMA movement..would Chris have a problem allowing the McCain Campaign using excepts from "When Your Backs Against The Wall" soundtrack on his website??? I love Jackson Browne as an Artist but was puzzled by his initiating legal means to legally remove "Running on Empty" from McCainshis web site w/o his Approval..either way I will always admire your Musical Contributions -IN Fact I will be attending Jacksons Concert in PHX on Nov 3rd-beacuse he's AWESOME! I just think OBAMA'S defeat is Crucial-R.H.

Chris, I just saw John York last Sunday evening at a friends house in Tustin, Ca. He was with his wife and played for about two hours. It was cool because he let us sing along with him. I rememebered most of the lyrics. My brother had your tape and played it all the time when he got back from Viet Nam.
I must admit that I had a crush on you. I asked John how you were doing and he said that you're doing well now.
I was glad to hear that you're doing well and still performing. By the way, you still look great!

What a very good site this is!
I have enjoyed, immensely, Chris and Herb's session on the Woodsongs Radio Hour. Does anyone know the exact time of that recording?
Anyway, the whole 59 minutes is on my MP3 player and it has been played time and time again! I wish radio was always that good (at least here in New Zealand)!
On YouTunes I found a exceptionally good couple of songs featuring Chris, Al Perkins, Bernie Leadon and Jerry Scheff doing Running the Roadblocks, I think it was, and God loves His children. Look out for it and Chris and Herb outdoor concert clips! Great!!!
Pete Christopher - 10/15/2008 10:24 AM
Play on man! I was turned on to your music when I was livin' in Tucson and was changed musically and spiritually while living with a Tohono O'Odham family, reading Chuck Bowden, and enjoying a company of freaks and cowboys. The music was a lot of bands that you were involved with actually, from The Byrds to Flying Burrito Bros to Manassas to your solo stuff. Great music!
My dog Cody was named after a synchronous event involving 3 or 4 Cody things and "Cody,Cody" was one of them. He was born in Tucson and now at 13 lives on the beach. He is the greatest dog. I always thought "Cody, Cody" could be a song about a dog. Wild Bill, Cody Pomeray, or some beautiful woman?
Thanks for the music.
Cheers,
Pete C.

Thank you Chris and Herb for making our first visit to Jorma?s Fur Peace Ranch on Saturday night such a memorable event. My wife and I had been looking forward to this show since I ordered the tickets in July. It was wonderful seeing the two of you having such a good time while giving the audience all they could ask for. I certainly hope you will return to FPR for future shows at Fur Peace Station (the perfect setting for great music). All the Best to You, Dave Haines, Fairmont, WV

I just heard you play last night at the
Fur Peace ranch. Thank you for a wonderful show. I really loved everything you did but I was exceptionally impressed with a song you did that you said was a Mills Brothers song. You had everyone in that room in the palm of your hand. Music is the power to make people "feel", and you had us breathless. thanks again...mike casey

I think the set the DRB did at "Hardly Strictly Bluegrass" was probably the single most important show I have ever heard. I never got to hear the Byrds, or the Burritos live, and for me all of that great music of past years we're on stage with you.. I have always been and still am inspired by your singing, playing and writing. I Grew up with this sound, so thank you very much for all the music.

Chris,
I'm the photographer/writer from Fretboard Journal who's going to be in your class at Fur Peace. I'm a novice (although fairly, um, mature) songwriter. The opportunity to be able to learn something from you is exciting, and somewhat daunting.
My professional capacity is going to keep me popping in and out of class as I shoot pictures in other sessions. I'll try not to be too obtrusive as I come and go.
At some point in time over the weekend I'd love to be able to set up a portrait shoot with you for Fretboard Jounal. I look forward to meeting you; I'm starting to practice now!

Another limb of the family tree, same roots; but a different season.
Hartmut - 08/31/2008 08:44 AM
Just forgot to ask: Until now I was quite sure that I own all CD's ever published by the DRB. But I was much surprised when I read about a live CD "Live in New York 1989" on the DRB reunion link. Is this CD available anywhere? Just in case it is, please let me know how and where I can get hold of it! I would pay (almost) any price!
Are there any plans that the DRB would record again in the next months? A live album would be really great! And all that filmed and recorded for DVD would be unbeatable really. Please think of the European fans that cannot visit the live shows (although I'm planning a trip to the U.S. in summer 2009 with my family, hopefully the DRB are still active then!).
Best regards, Hartmut
Hartmut - 08/30/2008 01:31 PM
The DRB reunited? That's great news, probably the greatest news in the music scene in the last 15 years. I do hope so much that you start recording again, because it's too difficult and hardly to afford to get to see you living in Austria. I love the songs Chris has written in the past years. I love to hear him sing with Herb, but there is nothing to compare it with the sound of the DRB!!! John Jorgenson to me is a great (if not the greatest) guitar player. But it's all wasted talent if he does not play the right music. So bring this diamond back to shine!!! It's all worth while. As I said, it's fantastic news!!! I thank the lord for hearing my prayers. Best regards to you all.
Gary - 08/29/2008 04:10 PM
I had the best seat in the house for Desert Rose Band @ the Bottom Line in NYC back in 1988? What a night, what a sound. I've also seen Chris live w/ McGuinn, Clark & Hillman @ the NYC Paladium & the Byrds reunion @ the Roy Orbison Tribute...
Chris, You need to get to South Florida more often, please.
Stewart Tedford - 08/27/2008 03:37 PM
Some years back, I took a BYRDS album (1973 reunion - well, not much of a reunion save for Gene Clark,s contributions) to a T-Shirt maker and asked the proprietor to make me several T-Shirts Roger McGuinn was wearing - i think Nudie made it for him. It had a Bald Eagle and other neat things on it. Curiously, most of the comments I got were "are you in the air force". I only had a few made and the screen was promtly destroyed. Would love to see you guys made that one for distribution.

Do any of y'all remember when Chris was a kid, playing mandolin in the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers? Great southern california bluegrass band in the early 60s...
Bruce - 08/23/2008 03:23 PM
Chris and Herb presented a most
impressive show at the Sellersville
Theater on August 22, 2008. The
"dynamic duo" performed 24 songs with
Chris shifted from mandolin to guitar
on several of them: "It Doesn't Matter",
"So Begins the Task", Heaven My Home"
and "You are My Flower". He played
quite effective lead guitar on these
tunes. Chris and Herb performed a guitar
duet on "You Are My Flower". Herb
impressed too with a lovely lead vocals
on "Wait a Minute" and "A Woman's Love".
They surveyed the Byrds, Burritos,
Desert Rose Band and Manassas periods,
along with Buck Owens and the Louvin
Brothers. Chris was battling a sore
throat, which didn't have much impact
on his exceptional performance.

We've been fans since the 60s through all Mr Hillman's musical ventures and ,yes, we did travel from England to the Ukrainian Centre gig. Thanks for a great night, for signing our stuff and for being real pros when the sound was less than perfect. Couldn't imagine Axl Rose being so tolerant, but who will be interested in him when he's turned 60!?Sadly, we had to rush off after the gig, otherwise I would still be asking questions! Same time, same place next year Chris!?

Hi Chris, I wanted to thank you again for signing my new guitar last night after having done such a great show (and encore) at the Indian Crossing Casino in Waupaca, WI. You and Bill and Herb reminded me of my heart's musical roots stretching back 30-plus years. Thank you, thank you, thank you...

I'm certain that I'm not alone in thanking Chris, Herb, and Bill for such an fantastic show this past Thursday night in Ft Wayne. I don't think many people realized that it was you that wanted to play in Ft Wayne, and not the promoter asking you to go out of your way to play on a day off! I was bown away by the commitment that the three of you make to your
musicianship, friendship, spirituality, and the sheer joy you show in playing together after all of these years. May your lives all continue to prosper, and continue to reach out to people like myself who had never heard you play together before. Thanks again!

Chris:
I was at your concert in Fort Wayne, IN last night. You guys were absolutely wonderful. I loved every note and lyric of every song. Great musicianship, great harmony, and a great spirit among you.
I was the guy who gave the answer "Ecclesiates" in your Bible quiz.
I remember the exact time/place I first heard Tambourine Man on the radio. The sound of the Byrds captivated me and still does today. It helped launch my own interest in music making.
Today I love Christ and His body, the church, as I'm sure you do as well.
It was a joy and privilege to hear you in person. Thank you my brother.

Chris (and Herb and Bill), Thanks for the great show at the Ark the other night, as well as all the music and inspiration over the years. The new Norteno song was great and especially the beautiful song after you spoke of tweaking the set and something about the Rat Pack - connected nicely through "The Water Is Wide" and "Heaven's Lullaby". Thanks again for everything. Sincerely, Pat and Anne Trahan - Bay City, MI

I've been listening to your music since about '72. I first heard the Burritos on a live radio concert that you did in Philly on WMMR from Sigma Sound. I still have the tape somwhere.
We saw your show last night in Whippany. It my first opportunity to see you live. My wife and I had a great evening. Give my complements to the rest of the band. And, by the way, what was the name of the young man who sat in on drobro and fiddle?

Hi Chris. I am very much looking forward to the first two Desert Rose Band shows. I'm flying to San Diego from Florida. It will be a dream come true, but I never really thought it would happen. I always wished I could go back to 1991 to the DRB show I saw when I was almost 16 years old. I hope I get a chance to say thanks in person. It means a lot that all six original will be there.. your best band IMHO!
The website redesign is great too!

Chris;
I am a long time fan of yours going back to the days of the Byrds. I have enjoyed your music for close to 40 years. I just saw you in Simsbury Connecticut (my hometown) and you and Herb were fantastic. Your voices are still so pure and the harmony was beautiful. I play bass for Joe Bouchard (founding member of Blue Oyster Cult) and we play around New England. I hope to see you again when you are in the area. Hope you come back to Simsbury next year!!!! Thanks for so many years of wonderful music.

Great website. Great artist. I have been a fan of 60's and 70's rock for many years and I have only recently got to know the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers work through reading about it in "best albums of all time" type music publications. Being a fan of vinyl I have brought many of these albums and think that this was some of the best music of the era which still sounds vital today. Glad to see that Chris Hillman is still active on the music scene. Maybe a tour to Australia may eventuate one day. From a fan from "Downunder" Australia. Simon

Hello Chris,
I was born in 1953 Since the 60's I have been following your career. Beginning with the Byrds (Gram Parsons)traveling on to the Burritos, etc.
Still some of my favorites :)
I stumbled on to your site and was happy to see you were touring again.
How can I get Desert Rose in Southern Indiana? We have a Casino on the River in Evansville,IN. You would be so welcome here. Best Regards, Bob

Chris! I was thinking about you and your career last night, and I wondered if you had a website. I swear that every band you've been in has had an influence in my musical life. Once a week I sit on my porch outside of Peoria, Illinois and sing "Mr. Spaceman" to my 4 year old triplets. I know Dan Fogelberg was a close friend of yours. Do you have a favorite Fogelberg story?
Thanks for all the great music!

Chris,
Thanks for all the great music. Unfortunately you really don't get the credit you deserve. Great stuff on the Hawks in LA album too.
Thanks

Howdy Chris from North Florida! The last time I saw you was with McGuinn here in Live Oak in 1998. Please come see us!
I hope you enjoy playing Hugh's Room in Toronto! I saw England's Strawbs there in 2004, thought it would be perfect for you and gave your e-mail to the management.
There is a guy on my Procol Harum list named Dennis Fetchet who told me to ask you about the Don Parmley/Dennis Fetchet Chicken Story, so please do tell us!

Hi! Your music is excellent! I just wish you'd come somewhere within driving distance of western Ky. (Nashville, Evansville, Louisville, Lexington. Even Memphis or St. Louis). Maybe you already did and I'm too late?
Jonathan Gorgas - 05/30/2008 06:29 PM
Wow. A few weeks ago I wrote in this book that I wish you would come to my region. I just looked at the list of acts at Mountain Music Meltdown in Saranac Lake, NY (my hometown), and you are on it. I said i would see you in NJ but I think I will wait and see you in my backyard. Looking forward to it.

"I Still Believe in You" and
"Summer Wind" Those songs will always

Hello Chris,
Japan tour was such a success - please plan another ASAP.
Meantime there is no single day our people don't talk about you and Herb on one of Japanese SNS(Mixi) since you started your tour in Japan.
I mentioned about D-18 Authentic in my diary on SNS. Let's see.
Thank you again for making our dream come true.
Best
Akira

The new site looks great and everything seems to work.
I'm hoping for a new CD in the next year or so - my copy of The Other Side is getting thin from being played so much. :o)
Be well.

Hey Chris,
I know about this guy selling an R100RS real cheap! Interested??? Just kidding my friend... Hey listen, I spotted your name on the dry-writer board at Nova Tunes last night. I was attending a showcase of a friend of mine... Simon Lynge. I was wondering just how you were doing. Fine I hope. Hey, I'm married now and have an 8 month old son, Joshua.
Hope to catch up with you soon...
Take care,
Brian Monahan

Hey- I am twenty four and have been fan my whole life- Growing up One Step Forward was by far the most played song in our house. Love the new CD, especially the subtle gospel lines. In the past few years we have had The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Rosanne Cash, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, Tony Trischka, Commander Cody and Doc Watson come to our region. I am hoping that they will presue you next. Anyway, I hope to see you in July 28 in NJ.
Willem van der Wagen - 05/14/2008 04:06 PM
Chris, all the best in Japan. Nice new site by the way. Looking forward to the DRB-reunion.

hey man-my wife and i saw you and herb in roanoke at 202 (a little club) for our anniversary for our nite out. big fan of both yall for many years... especially the desert rose years and rice rice....years. i was trying to hawk a loar and you already had one...damn. that doesnt happen very often, anyhow...awesome to finally see you after years of listening, but in a small appalachain town like roanoke, what can i say. keep the music happening. at 53 years old and a small town player - i'm inspired!!
Roger Vann - 05/04/2008 05:12 PM
The show at the Station Inn in Nashville on may 2 was really astonishing. It was an extra treat to hear John Jorgensen sit in on guitar. He really rips it up. I had heard Chris and Herb 3 years ago. This was a better show in a smaller venue. It's not often one gets to hear singing this good, even in a town like Nashville.
Nikki - 05/04/2008 12:25 AM
Great show in Bartlett Tn. I have seen you play through the years and I really enjoyed the show with Herb Pederson. You all were awesome. God Bless you and yours!
Donnie Dixon - 05/03/2008 10:54 AM
Great show at the Station Inn. I followed you with the Desert Rose Band in the 80s, but wasnt familiar with all the other ventures you have been with. Our friend, who is a big Graham Parsons fan, got us into this side of the music and we throughly enjoy it. The music was great and the sound was awesome. Wasnt expecting the bluegrass style (which I love btw), but the variations you guys played was cool. I should have known it would be in that style being it was at the Station Inn. Keep up the great music and look forward to seeing you guys again soon on your way back thru Nashville.
God bless!
Donnie
